How the PSL log works

The Betway Premiership log orders 16 clubs by points, with three for a win and one for a draw. Each club plays 30 games, meeting the other 15 at home and away between August and May.

Watch the P column. MTN8, Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup ties, together with CAF trips, leave some clubs with matches in hand, so the club in sixth place may be nearer the top than its points show.

Goal difference comes next to the points. Many PSL games finish 1-0 or 1-1, so a single big home win moves a club up two or three spots.

PSL log table top 8 and the MTN8

The dashed line under eighth place marks the MTN8 cut. The top eight at the end of the season play the next MTN8, the knockout cup that opens the following campaign with prize money and a trophy in the first weeks.

That line shapes the last ten rounds. A club in ninth or tenth with a few games left plays every match for the points it needs, while a side safe in mid-table can ease off.

The points gap from fifth to twelfth on the log above shows how tight that race is this season, and the form column shows who is closing in.

CAF places and the drop

The top two clubs on the PSL log table earn CAF Champions League places for the next season. Third place goes to the CAF Confederation Cup, together with the Nedbank Cup winners.

The 16th-placed club is relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The 15th-placed club goes into the promotion play-offs against sides from that division, so its distance from 14th matters more than any other gap on the bottom half of the log.

With only 30 rounds, three defeats in a row can drop a club from the top eight into that fight within a month. The coloured strips on the log above show each zone as it stands today.

PSL fixtures and the log this week

PSL games coming up follow by date with SAST kick-offs. A Tip button appears on each once its prediction page goes live, roughly 40 hours before the game.

Reading the fixtures next to the log shows which games matter most. A meeting between two clubs either side of the MTN8 cut, or between 14th and 15th, swings two places on the log at once.

PSL log FAQ

How many clubs play in the PSL?

16 clubs. Each meets the other 15 home and away, so a season runs to 30 rounds.

What does the top eight on the PSL log mean?

The top eight at the end of the season play the next MTN8, the cup that opens the following season.

Which PSL clubs qualify for Africa?

The top two go to the CAF Champions League. Third place and the Nedbank Cup winners go to the CAF Confederation Cup.

How often is the PSL log updated?

The standings are read again every 30 minutes on match days, so a Saturday result moves the log by the evening.
