Sports betting guide South Africa: law, tax and markets

Our sports betting guide South Africa section covers 6 questions that come before a bet slip. Is your bookmaker legal? Does SARS want a share of your winnings? What do the market names mean, and how does a soccer bet work?

The market guides quote the rules licensed bookmakers publish and work every example in rand.

Betting law and tax in South Africa

South African betting law rests on provincial licences. All 9 provincial gambling boards license bookmakers, and the National Gambling Board keeps the national list. Online sports betting with a licensed bookmaker is legal at 18 or over, while online casino games stay illegal under section 11 of the National Gambling Act.

Tax is the shortest chapter of any sports betting guide South Africa punters read. SARS treats winnings from occasional betting as non-taxable, and you declare them on your return. Professional gamblers are taxed on their profit, and the bookmakers pay provincial taxes of 6% to 9% themselves.

Work out a multi before you stake it

Most betting guides end at the same point: a slip with a stake, odds and a return. Enter the odds of each leg and your stake in rand. The calculator multiplies the legs into total odds and a possible return before you confirm anything.

A three-leg multi at 1.50, 1.80 and 2.10 multiplies to 5.67, so a R100 stake returns R567 if every leg wins. One losing leg sinks the whole slip. That is why the longest multis pay the most and land the least.

Compare betting sites by what you need

After the guides, our comparison pages line bookmakers up on one need at a time. The welcome bonus page sorts offers by their rollover. The betting apps page shows which sites offer an App Store app, an Android APK or a home-screen shortcut.

The crypto betting page compares coins and licences. The OTT voucher page lists the sites that take a cash voucher bought at a till. The horse racing page covers Durban July betting and the tote. Each page keeps its own ranked list, so the order changes with the need you pick.
