Champions League places and the drop to the Segunda

Four Champions League tickets go to the top four on the Spanish log. The clubs straight behind them enter the Europa League and the Conference League.

At the other end, the bottom three go down to the Segunda Division and three clubs come up in their place.

On the La Liga log table those places carry their own colours, so the line between fourth and fifth stands out at once. The coloured strip on each row follows the competition’s qualification notes. When a Spanish cup final hands out a European place, the strip on the log moves to match it.

With 38 rounds, the gap in the Pts column turns into a count of wins. Six points behind fourth place means two wins to make up, and the same sum applies above the drop.

Head-to-head before goal difference

Spain breaks ties differently from England. Clubs level on points are split by the matches between them first, and overall goal difference only comes in after that.

A side with the better goal difference still sits lower if it came off worse in the two league games against its rival. That rule weighs most in the race for fourth and in the fight above the drop.

The P column counts games played, so a club with a match in hand shows a lower number than its rivals. The Form column lists the last five league results, oldest on the left, with W, D and L.

Next LaLiga games and the late SAST finish

Spain runs on Central European Time, an hour behind SAST through the northern winter. From the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October the clocks match.

The 21:00 evening game in Madrid or Barcelona starts at 22:00 SAST in winter. Every match in the next seven days sits below by date. A Tip button appears once its prediction is written.

A Sunday game at that hour ends close to midnight, so the Monday morning log already carries the full weekend. The La Liga log table moves within about 30 minutes of each result, because the standings are read again every half hour on match days. The full fortnight, with last week’s scores, sits on the La Liga fixtures page.
